Hills employees walk the walk when it comes to safety: Kicking off 2026 with health & safety training

Share to:

For the tenth year in a row, Hills Quarry Products postponed the opening of its sites on the first working day of the new year to deliver company-wide health and safety training, reinforcing its ongoing Safer for All campaign.

Colleagues were encouraged to take personal ownership of safety every day, signposting health and safety around them in a way that almost makes safety sign redundant, by speaking up, reporting hazards, holding each other to account, and leading by example to continue the positive culture shift seen across the business.

The annual training programme included a year-in-review, toolbox talks, near-miss and accident reporting, and health and safety updates across the business. It was delivered to quarry operatives across Berkshire, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, and Wiltshire supporting teams that supply sand, gravel, and ready-mixed concrete across the south.

A key focus of the training was the importance of wearing correct PPE on site, identifying potential hazards, and actively reporting them using ‘Near Miss’ QR codes displayed across all Hills’ sites.

Divisional Managing Director – Quarry Products, Steve Huntly, addressed employees during the sessions:

“In 2025, we built a solid foundation. Not only have we delivered several improvements and seen a strong shift in our health and safety culture, but we’ve also introduced new tools to help everyone do their job more safely.”

Steve Huntly also highlighted the importance of wellbeing, by drawing attention to the company’s award-winning Wellbeing Hub, and its January focus on Men’s Health.

“I’m extremely proud that Hills Quarry Products has also been shortlisted as a finalist with the MPA Health and Safety Awards for wellbeing.

“Men’s health is a deeply personal subject both to me, and to the wider management team. We’re focusing on checking in with each other and genuinely caring about one another. The key is asking more than once, because most of us don’t answer honestly the first time.”
