Ever wondered what it’s like to be a mini mix driver?
It’s more than just driving a truck… it’s a combination of precision, patience, and people skills.
Meet Kendra, the first female mini mix driver at Woodsford Quarry and Concrete Plant in Dorset, whose journey into this career is as inspiring as it is unconventional.
Kendra didn’t take the usual route into construction.
After studying Motor Vehicle Studies and Aerospace Engineering at university, she started her career working at weighbridges.
But her ambition didn’t stop there. Determined to push boundaries, she went on to gain multiple HGV licenses, including her arctic license during Covid-19, a rare and challenging qualification. Finally, in 2022, she joined Hills, stepping behind the wheel as a fully qualified mini mix driver.
For Corrine from Comms, spending a day with Kendra offered a rare insight into the daily life of someone who truly loves what they do. From the moment she started her shift, it was clear that no two days are ever the same for a mini mix driver.
So, what’s it actually like behind the wheel of a mini mix truck?
For Corrine from Comms, spending a day with Kendra offered a rare insight into the daily life of someone who truly loves what they do.
From the moment she started her shift, it was clear that no two days are ever the same for a mini mix driver.
First stop: Delivering concrete to Fox Home Improvements
The day began at Fox Home Improvements. Kendra carefully manoeuvred the mini mix truck into position, delivering concrete that would be moved into the house by wheelbarrow.
“It’s all about accuracy here,” she explained. “Even a small miscalculation can make it difficult for the team to work efficiently.”
Watching her work, it’s obvious that driving a mini mix isn’t just about getting from point A to B… it’s about precision, planning, and teamwork.
Job two: Pouring concrete at Quantum
Next, Kendra and Corrine headed to Quantum, where concrete was delivered directly to the floor.
Here, a digger would shift the concrete around, but it was Kendra’s job to ensure it arrived at exactly the right spot and in perfect condition.
“Every delivery has its challenges,” she says. “Sometimes it’s the layout of the site, sometimes it’s weather conditions, and sometimes it’s just how the concrete settles. Being flexible is key.”
The variety of tasks a mini mix driver faces daily is what makes the job so dynamic. One minute she’s carefully navigating a narrow street, the next she’s coordinating with a digger operator to ensure the concrete is spread perfectly.
Third and final stop: Ecoscreeding
The final stop of the day was Ecoscreeding, where liquid screed was pumped straight into a house.
This requires both precision and speed. Too slow, and the screed could start setting before it’s in place. Too fast, and it could overflow or create an uneven surface. Kendra’s experience and steady hand ensured the process went flawlessly.
“Every day is different… I love the banter with the team and building relationships with customers. It makes me love this job even more,” she says with a smile.
And it’s clear that Kendra doesn’t just deliver concrete. She delivers confidence and reliability, qualities that make her stand out as a mini mix driver.
Why being a mini mix driver is rewarding…
Being a mini mix driver isn’t just about driving a truck. It’s about problem-solving on the spot, managing logistics, and interacting with a wide range of people.
Kendra’s story shows that this career is as much about personal growth as it is about professional skill. For those considering a career in construction or transport, the role of a mini mix driver offers variety, challenge, and satisfaction every single day.
Kendra’s journey reminds us that ambition, hard work, and a willingness to learn can lead to exciting opportunities, even behind the wheel of a concrete truck. Whether navigating tricky streets, coordinating complex deliveries, or simply sharing a laugh with the team, the life of a mini mix driver is full of energy, expertise, and unexpected moments that make the job truly rewarding.
