Hills Quarry Products provided the sand which helped create an award-winning garden at 2022’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Our sand was used in the manufacture of traditional lime walls featured in the ‘Mind Garden’.
The Mind Garden
The Mind Garden was designed by eight-time RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winner Andy Sturgeon. The garden, created for the charity Mind, featured beautiful bespoke mortars made by Heritage Cob and Lime using sand from Hills’ Woodsford Quarry near Dorchester.
The series of curved mortar walls were inspired by petals tossed to the ground, which provided a brilliant backdrop for the plants and created seating areas and framed views of the garden. They were made using Hills sharp sand as the base ingredient and blended with Heritage Cob and Lime’s Lime Putty with added crushed oyster shells.
Hills’ Sand Testimonies
Sarah from Heritage Cob and Lime said: “Hills’ amazing sharp sand has a quality that surpasses all others. With lime mortars we require a good level of aggregate throughout the sand and Hills’ ticks all the boxes. The team at Woodsford are great, it’s always a pleasure to deal with them.”
Terry Newsham, Commercial Business Manager, Quarry Products added: “We have worked with Heritage Cob and Lime for over 10 years. It is great that we’ve contributed to their success at the Chelsea Flower Show, they are fantastic people to work with.”
